About Oil and Gas Information

Oil and Gas Information is a free, public directory of US oil and gas well activity. We aggregate well headers, permit and completion records, operator rollups, and field summaries from each state’s regulator and expose them as browsable pages by state, county, operator, field, and individual well.

Every figure on the site traces back to a single upstream source listed below. We do not edit the underlying records — if something looks wrong on a page, the upstream regulator is the authoritative place to verify.

How the data flows

For each state, scheduled jobs pull fresh extracts from the regulator’s public portal — CSV or ZIP downloads, ArcGIS feature services, or weekly activity reports, depending on what that state publishes — and load them into a unified PostgreSQL warehouse. The website renders pages server-side directly from that warehouse via the OilGas API.

Some states (notably Texas) publish each permit, completion, or recompletion as its own row, so a single well can appear many times in the raw data. Pages on this site dedupe those records by well API number and show an “Updates” count so you can see at a glance which wells have been worked repeatedly. The individual well page lists the full timeline of those records.

Data is provided as-is from each regulator. We do not warrant accuracy, completeness, or timeliness. For any decision that turns on a specific well or operator, verify with the source agency linked above.
